Goth on Monday. Kawaii on Tuesday. Cyberpunk by Friday. A little grunge, a little glam, something vaguely Y2K and a pair of boots that could probably be classified as a health and safety hazard.

Alt Vault is an alternative fashion, beauty, hair and music space built around one simple belief:

You don’t have to pick a box.

I’m Hayley Esther, the creator behind Alt Vault. My background spans fashion, beauty, styling, marketing and blogging, and I’ve spent years fascinated by the way clothes, makeup and creativity allow us to tell the world something about ourselves before we’ve said a word.

And I’ve never been particularly interested in beige.

Why I Created Alt Vault

Alternative style can sometimes come with an extraordinary number of unofficial rules.

Are you goth enough?
Can you mix these two aesthetics?
Does that outfit count as punk?
Are you too old for that?
Can you wear that if you also like this?

Alt Vault’s answer is considerably simpler:

Brilliant. Let’s work with that.

This isn’t a website about perfectly recreating an aesthetic. It’s about discovering elements you love and turning them into something personal.

We’ll explore alternative fashion, beauty, hair, accessories, music and subcultures, from goth and punk to cyberpunk, emo, kawaii, grunge, Y2K, cosplay-inspired style and whatever happens when you throw several of them into a blender.

Because sometimes the best answer to “What’s your aesthetic?” is:

“Mine.”

What’s Inside the Vault?

You’ll find practical style guides, outfit inspiration, alternative beauty, colourful hair ideas, playlists, product discoveries and plenty of opportunities to experiment.

There’ll also be The Vault — practical resources designed to help you understand what you already own, build looks, discover your personal style and buy more intentionally.

And eventually, I want Alt Vault to become more than a website.

But we’re building the world before we build the app.

Alt Vault isn’t here to make you more alternative.

It’s not here to decide whether you qualify.

And it’s definitely not here to hand you another set of fashion rules.

It’s here to give you ideas, tools and permission to experiment with your own creativity.

Wear the ridiculous boots.

Put the unexpected songs on the playlist.
