The Alternative Style Starter Guide: Find Your Vibe Without Replacing Your Entire Wardrobe
So, you want to dress more alternative.
Excellent.
Your bank account has just sensed danger.
Before you order seventeen pairs of platform boots, dye everything you own black and decide you require an entirely new personality, I have good news:
You probably already own enough to start.
Alternative style isn’t about purchasing a ready-made aesthetic. It’s about taking inspiration from the things you genuinely like and turning them into something that feels like you.
Welcome to your first proper raid of the Alt Vault.
First: You Don’t Need to Pick a Team
Goth.
Punk.
Grunge.
Emo.
Cyberpunk.
Kawaii.
Alternative fashion can start sounding like character selection on a video game.
And while understanding different subcultures and their histories absolutely matters, your personal wardrobe doesn’t have to sit perfectly inside one category.
You might love goth makeup but prefer punk clothing.
Maybe you adore kawaii accessories but also own enough black clothing to disappear during a power cut.
That’s fine.
Your objective isn’t to become a textbook example of an aesthetic.
It’s to discover yours.
Start With Your Existing Wardrobe
Before buying anything, open your wardrobe.
We’re going shopping without leaving the house.
Look for pieces such as:
- Black jeans
- Denim
- Oversized T-shirts
- Band tees
- Checked shirts
- Leather or faux-leather jackets
- Mini or maxi skirts
- Boots
- Trainers
- Oversized jumpers
- Interesting jewellery
- Anything metallic, distressed, sheer or unusually shaped
Take the pieces that feel slightly more interesting than your everyday basics and put them together.
Congratulations.
You’ve started.
The Goth Vault 🖤
If you’re drawn towards dramatic silhouettes, dark colours, lace, velvet, boots and beautiful makeup that looks like it has absolutely no intention of attending a 9am team meeting, you might enjoy exploring goth-inspired style.
You don’t need to immediately purchase an elaborate floor-length black dress.
Start with something ridiculously simple:
Black jeans + black top + boots + silver jewellery.
Then experiment.
Add lace.
Try a dramatic lip.
Layer jewellery.
Play with eyeliner.
Introduce velvet.
The details can transform an incredibly basic outfit.
And remember: goth is a music-rooted subculture, not simply another word for wearing black. If you’re interested in the style, exploring the music and history alongside the clothes makes the whole thing far more interesting.
The Punk Vault ⚡
Punk has never exactly been famous for asking permission.
That makes it a brilliant place to experiment.
Try:
Jeans + band tee + battered jacket + boots.
Then customise.
Pins. Patches. Chains. Rips. Paint. DIY details.
You don’t necessarily need the expensive “punk-inspired” jacket being sold to you by a fashion retailer.
Half the fun is making something your own.
In fact, if it looks slightly too polished, you might want to mess it up a bit.
The Grunge Vault 🎸
If your preferred fashion philosophy is somewhere around I made an effort but would like everyone to believe I didn’t, welcome.
Grunge-inspired wardrobes are incredibly easy to experiment with using ordinary clothing.
Try:
Oversized tee + loose jeans + checked shirt + chunky shoes.
Layering does most of the work.
Oversized knitwear, denim, worn-in pieces and darker neutrals can all play a part.
This is also one of the easiest aesthetics to blend with other styles.
Grunge + goth?
Absolutely.
Grunge + kawaii?
Now you’ve got my attention.
The Cyber Vault 💿
This is where things start getting futuristic.
Cyberpunk-inspired fashion can involve metallics, neon details, technical fabrics, unusual eyewear, chunky footwear and silhouettes that look like you’re prepared for an extremely stylish dystopia.
But again, you don’t need the entire outfit.
Start with:
Black base outfit + one futuristic statement piece.
Maybe that’s metallic makeup.
A neon accessory.
Silver trousers.
Unusual sunglasses.
A utility-style jacket.
Cyber styling works brilliantly when one piece does the shouting and everything else lets it.
The Kawaii Vault 💗
Alternative doesn’t automatically mean dark.
Kawaii fashion opens the door to pastels, characters, bows, playful jewellery, adorable bags and clothing that makes you smile when you put it on.
And yes, you can mix it with darker aesthetics.
Actually, please do.
Try:
Simple outfit + ridiculously cute accessory.
Character bag.
Colourful cardigan.
Novelty jewellery.
Pastel trainers.
Hair clips.
Then keep adding until your inner six-year-old approves.
What If You Like Everything?
Welcome to my world.
You don’t need to build six separate wardrobes.
Instead, build a base wardrobe and change the styling.
Imagine you own:
Black jeans.
Black skirt.
White shirt.
Black tee.
Oversized jumper.
Denim jacket.
Boots.
Trainers.
From there, accessories, makeup, layering and a handful of statement pieces can take those basics in completely different directions.
Your black skirt doesn’t know whether it’s goth, punk or kawaii.
You decide that when you style it.
Create Your Three-Word Style Code
Here’s your first Alt Vault challenge.
Choose three words describing how you want your style to feel.
Not aesthetics.
Feelings.
Maybe:
Dark. Dramatic. Feminine.
Or:
Colourful. Chaotic. Cute.
Or:
Futuristic. Sharp. Powerful.
Or, frankly:
Weird. Fun. Mine.
Keep those three words somewhere.
The next time you’re considering buying something, ask yourself whether it fits at least one of them.
Suddenly you’re building your wardrobe rather than collecting random pieces from whatever aesthetic TikTok introduced you to this week.
Don’t Buy the Whole Look
This is where I want Alt Vault to be different.
I’m going to show you things to buy on this blog. There will eventually be shopping edits and affiliate links because discovering brilliant products is part of the fun.
But I don’t want you to believe you need everything I’m showing you.
Try the idea first.
Raid your wardrobe.
Borrow inspiration.
Restyle something.
Customise something.
Then, when you’ve discovered a style you genuinely enjoy wearing, invest in the pieces that will make a difference.
Because the objective isn’t to look alternative enough for somebody else.
It’s to look in the mirror and think:
Yep. That’s me.
Your First Mission
Tomorrow, choose one outfit you already own.
Then change one thing.
Add heavier jewellery.
Wear the ridiculous shoes.
Try the eyeliner.
Add the bow.
Throw on the band tee.
Wear something you’ve been saving because it’s “a bit much.”
There is no final level where somebody hands you an Alternative Person Certificate.
You just experiment.
And that’s exactly what we’re going to do inside Alt Vault.
🔐 Next vault to unlock: beauty.
